The era of luring staff with perks like free meals, laundry services, and yoga sessions is passing. Today, executives are turning to more assertive measures — a shift that is prompting some workers to ponder whether they are ready to relinquish the flexibility they’ve grown accustomed to.

Even tech industry stalwarts that previously championed remote work are adjusting their strategies. Zoom, a key player in facilitating the rapid shift to remote work during the pandemic, has now requested employees residing within 50 miles of a Zoom office to attend in-person at least twice a week. Meanwhile, Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has updated its return-to-office guidelines, warning employees that they may risk termination if they don’t commit to being in the office at least three days a week starting from September 5.
